Amphibians of Japan
Nathan is a herpetologist who works in Reptilehouse the Earth. Join him in a journey to see what kinds of amphibians Japan has to offer and how to find them.
Nathan is the Head Animal Keeper at Reptielenhuis de Aarde and will be joining AnimeCon this year to introduce you to the fascinating world of Amphibians in Japan! During AnimeCon, Nathan will host three lectures: one focusing on Japanese reptiles, one focussing on Japanese insects and one focussing on Japanese amphibians.
The lecture will begin with a short introduction to amphibians: what they are, what makes them unique, and what distinguishes them from other animals. Nathan will then introduce some of Japan’s most unusual and fascinating species, explaining what they look like, where they can be found, and, where relevant, their connections to Japanese history and culture.
From remarkable salamanders to unique frogs, Japan is home to a wide variety of amphibians, including species that can be found nowhere else in the world.
Meet a Real Snake!
Amphibians are quite sensitive to stress and handling because of their delicate, specialized skin. Despite this, Nathan still wants to end the lecture with a live animal encounter. Therefore, the amphibian lecture will conclude with the opportunity to hold a Ball Python! Why do amphibians have such delicate skin, and why should you never simply pick them up when you encounter them in the wild? You’ll learn all about it during the lecture!
The lecture will end with a special live animal encounter featuring a Ball Python. While this species originates from Africa rather than Japan, it is a calm snake that is accustomed to being handled by people. After the lecture, visitors will have the opportunity to touch or hold the snake or even let it rest around their shoulders! Nathan has been safely hosting these kinds of animal encounters at Reptielenhuis de Aarde for more than 10 years. For all the cosplayers out there: a real snake around your shoulders will make for a really memorable cosplay photo, so take your chance!
Curious about the amphibians of Japan? Make sure to join Nathan’s lectures at AnimeCon! And if the lecture sparks a newfound love for amphibians, you can visit Reptielenhuis de Aarde in Breda to discover even more amazing animals.
