The Rise of VTubing

This lecture explores the rise of VTubers and the growing influence of virtual creators in online entertainment. You will learn what VTubers are, how they create content, and the technology and culture behind the phenomenon. The session will conclude with a live VTuber Q&A and meet-and-greet.

VTubers, or Virtual YouTubers, have become a rapidly growing part of online entertainment, combining livestreaming, digital avatars, and interactive storytelling to create a unique form of content creation. In this lecture, we will explore how the VTuber phenomenon developed, the technology that allows creators to perform through virtual characters, and the communities that formed around them. Attendees will gain insight into how VTubers stream, entertain audiences, and build strong connections with their viewers across platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.

The session will also introduce Variance Project, a Netherlands-based VTuber agency and creative initiative focused on story, lore, and worldbuilding. Rather than simply creating streamers, Variance Project builds an interconnected narrative universe where each talent represents a character within a larger world. These characters belong to different factions, each with its own identity, themes, and story elements that contribute to the broader lore of of the world of Variance Project named Feyras.

To conclude the session, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a live VTuber Q&A and meet-and-greet, where they can interact directly with one of the virtual talents, ask questions about VTubing, and experience the medium firsthand.

Tijdens de sessie wordt ook Variance Project geïntroduceerd, een in Nederland gevestigde VTuber-agency en creatief initiatief dat zich richt op verhaal, lore en worldbuilding. In plaats van alleen streamers te creëren, bouwt Variance Project aan een verbonden verhalend universum waarin elk talent een personage vertegenwoordigt binnen een grotere wereld. Deze personages behoren tot verschillende facties, elk met een eigen identiteit, thema’s en verhaalelementen die bijdragen aan de bredere lore van de wereld van Variance Project, genaamd Feyras.

Aan het einde van de sessie krijgen deelnemers de kans om deel te nemen aan een live VTuber Q&A en meet-and-greet. Daar kunnen ze rechtstreeks in gesprek gaan met een van de virtuele talents, vragen stellen over VTubing en het medium zelf ervaren.
