To celebrate 40 years of Studio Ghibli, we will screen no less than 3 Ghibli movies. Hidden spirits always appear in the background of Studio Ghibli's work, so we had to make a selection. We chose My Neighbor Totoro over other works because this movie was one of Ghibli's first spirit themed movies to reach the worldwide anime fandom.

My Neighbor Totoro is a story about two girls, Satsuki and Mei, who move into an older house in the countryside together with their father Tatsuo Kusakabe. The reason for this is because their mother Yasuko has taken ill and is still recovering in the hospital.

This old house however turns out to be infested with little dust-like creatures that live in the attic. One of their neighbors, Granny Ogaki, tells the girls these are called Soor Spirits that like to make forgotten, old and dark spaces their homes.

With their father working and their mother in the hospital, the two girls explore their new surroundings together. During this, Mei encounters another magical creature, who she calls “Totoro”, a large and ancient spirit that is the protector of the forest nearby. 

Later, while the girls wait for their father's bus, Totoro appears next to them, allowing Satsuki to see him for the first time. Totoro has only a leaf on his head for protection against the rain, prompting Satsuki to offer her umbrella to him. Delighted, he gives her a bundle of nuts and seeds in return. A giant, bus-shaped cat arrives. Totoro boards it and leaves.

Om te vieren dat Studio Ghibli al 40 jaar bestaat, vertonen wij maar liefst drie Ghibli-films. Hidden spirits, oftewel verborgen geesten, laten zich altijd in de achtergrond zien van Studio Ghibli’s werken. We moesten daarom wel deze selectie maken. We kozen voor My Neighbor Totoro omdat dit een van Studio Ghibli's eerste films was met een geesten thema, die wereldwijd het anime fandom bereikte. 

My Neighbor Totoro gaat over  twee meisjes, Satsuki en Mei, die samen met hun vader Tatsuo Kusakabe naar het platteland verhuizen in een oud huis. De reden hiervoor is om dichterbij het ziekenhuis te zijn waar hun moeder Yasuko herstellende is van haar ziekte. 

Hun nieuwe huis blijkt bewoond te zijn door kleine stofachtige wezentjes die zich vooral verschuilen op zolder. Een van hun buren, Granny Ogaki, vertelt het meisje dat dit “Soot spirits” zijn; kleine geesten die zich graag in oude, verlaten en donkere plekken verschuilen.

Terwijl hun vader naar werk is en hun moeder in het ziekenhuis ligt, besluiten de meisjes hun nieuwe omgeving te verkennen. 

Tijdens een van haar avonturen ontmoet Mei een ander magisch wezen, dat ze “Totoro” noemt. Totoro is een groot en eeuwenoud boswezen en de beschermer van het bos.

Later, terwijl de meisjes op de bus van hun vader wachten, verschijnt Totoro naast hun, waardoor Satsuki Totoro nu ook voor het eerst ziet. Totoro heeft alleen een blad op zijn hoofd om zich te beschermen tegen de regen. Waarop Satsuki hem haar paraplu aanbiedt. Totoro geeft haar als dank een handje noten en zaden. Even later arriveert een gigantische kat bus. Totoro stapt in en verdwijnt in de nacht.
