An Introduction to Furries

Let's talk about the differences, but mostly the many similarities, between the anime and furry fandoms!

Beastars, BNA, Wolf's Rain, Pokémon, The Cat Returns, Princess Mononoke, Inuyasha (literally translated to "DogYaksha")... there is no shortage of anthropomorphic (or "humanized") animals in manga and anime. No wonder: some of the oldest art in the world, going back tens of thousands of years, and from all around the world, is found in stone carvings and cave drawings of half-human, half-animal creatures. "Furry" is nothing new; humans have been mixing animals with humans in art since before the first civilizations arose. Catgirls are just some of the more modern interpretations!

After 20 years of staffing at both anime and furry conventions, one thing is clear; despite both fandoms often claiming otherwise, there are far more similarities than there are differences between the two. And in a world filled with animosity, I think it is time to bridge the gap and show everybody just how similar we really are.

Let's talk about our common ground, and let me introduce you to the wonderful world of furry - be it through art, cosplaying as an anthro animal (fursuiting), or just hanging out with friends at a furry convention!

Laten we het hebben over de verschillen, maar vooral over de vele overeenkomsten tussen de anime- en furryfandoms!

Beastars, BNA, Wolf's Rain, Pokémon, The Cat Returns, Princess Mononoke, Inuyasha (letterlijk vertaald “DogYaksha”)… in manga en anime is er geen gebrek aan antropomorfe (of “vermenselijkte”) dieren. Geen wonder: sommige van de oudste kunstwerken ter wereld, van tienduizenden jaren geleden en uit alle delen van de wereld, zijn terug te vinden in steengravures en grottekeningen van half-mens, half-dier wezens. “Furry” is dus helemaal niet nieuw; mensen combineren dieren en mensen in kunst sinds nog voor het ontstaan van de eerste beschavingen. Catgirls zijn slechts een van de modernere interpretaties!

Na 20 jaar ervaring op zowel anime- als furryconventies is één ding duidelijk: ondanks dat beide fandoms soms anders beweren, zijn er veel meer overeenkomsten dan verschillen tussen de twee. En in een wereld vol tegenstellingen, denk ik dat het tijd is om de kloof te overbruggen en iedereen te laten zien hoe veel we eigenlijk op elkaar lijken.

Laten we het hebben over onze gemeenschappelijke grond, en laat me je meenemen in de prachtige wereld van furry—of dat nu via kunst is, door te cosplayen als een anthro-dier (fursuiting), of gewoon door gezellig rond te hangen met vrienden op een furryconventie!
